By now, you may think me a strange person.  Maybe so.  However,
today I had a weird experience, one you may relate to.  It’s two days
before Christmas, 2012, and after a long day shopping for presents
night falls and we’re on a bus, back to Parliament Hill Fields to pick
up the car and go home.  I look around at the faces, all amply lit
within, courtesy of bus power, and a thought occurs.  Behind each
face there lies a world of imagination.  Each individual, with his and
her hopes and fears, delights, fantasies, aspirations,
disappointments, frustrations, redemption - and the only thing to
keep cohesion, to form a society, to hold people together, is the
narratives we share.  These revolve, exclusively, around religion,
history, sex and money.  Once we had arrived home, the senses
kicked in.   We ate expensive chocolates very slowly.  Eventually,
“Mmmm, It just melts,” Belinda said.  Then she got naked, and I got
to run my hands all along her fabulous curves.

Life rolls like that.  One minute you’re here, the next - there.  If you
really got to think how much you pack in what you tend to forget
was a lost and boring day, you would be amazed.  Ok, so you didn’t
win the Lottery, or wind up finding yourself with a famous movie
star.  Still, life has presented you with a multitude of worlds of
experience.

The one area our common narratives have not included is science.
We live in a hi-tech society, but we do not define ourselves by it, in
spite of the increasingly nuanced means by which it is pinning us in
and defining us.  I am not my mobile phone or laptop, although
goodness knows I spend enough time on these.  They have become
invaluable tools; and tool per se represent an extension of mankind’s
mind and capabilities.
